TikTok Recipes: Asian

As I dove back into the world of TikTok recipes this week, I discovered a new collection of delicious, international foods. Originating from Asian cultures, these dishes bring some incredible flavors to the table.

Starting off, we have Japanese strawberry ice cream mochi, perfect for dessert or a sweet snack.

Strawberry Ice Cream Mochi Ingredients

  • Strawberry ice cream

  • ½ cup whole milk

  • ⅓ cup cane sugar

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp coconut oil

  • ½ cup Mochiko sweet rice flour

  • Red food coloring (as much as necessary)

  • Cornstarch OR potato starch (to dust cutting board)

To make this delicious frozen snack, you need to start by taking 4 scoops of your ice cream and wrapping them each into balls using plastic wrap. Place these balls into the freezer to let them harden for a few hours. Simmer your milk and sugar until the sugar is dissolved in a pot over the stove. Then, add in your vanilla extract, coconut oil, and food coloring. Next, slowly add in your Mochiko sweet rice flour (little scoops at a time) and increase your heat to medium while consistently stirring for about 5 minutes. When your mixture becomes a glutinous consistency (and has a chewy taste), dust a cutting board or your counter with cornstarch or potato starch so you can start stretching it out and making it less sticky. After it is cool and stretched, cut into 4 even pieces. (If it takes a while to cool, you may place it in the fridge or freezer for a few minutes.) Place your 4 ice cream balls on top of each cut-out piece and fold each side over the ice cream. To finish, use plastic wrap to make them ball-shaped once again.

Next, we have a refreshing Asian Cucumber Salad. According to user @bondenavant, cucumbers are 96% water and contain tons of vitamins and minerals, making them a super healthy snack.

Asian Cucumber Salad Ingredients

  • 5 cucumbers

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 2 tsp soy sauce

  • 2 tsp sesame oil

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • 1 ½ tablespoons rice vinegar

  • 2 tsp chili oil

To start, partially peel your cucumbers leaving some skin on them because, according to our TikTok chef, a lot of the nutrients are found in the peel. Next, slice them thickly, place in a large bowl, season them with your salt, and toss it all together. Then, smash and mince your two cloves of garlic very small, add to the bowl, and toss one again. Take your soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, olive oil, rice vinegar, and chili oil and combine and toss those together, as well. There you have it! A healthy and fresh Asian salad.

Another salad introduced by @bondenavant is called the Thai Spicy Long Bean Salad. This TikTok chef swears that long beans are one of the best things you can eat for your skin. Why? She says it’s because they are rich in Vitamin K which is essential for wound healing.

Thai Spicy Long Bean Salad Ingredients

  • 1 bushel of long beans

  • 2 garlic cloves

  • 1 serrano chile pepper

  • 1 cup basil leaves

  • 1-2 cups cherry tomatoes

  • 3 limes

  • 2 tablespoons fish sauce

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ½ tsp pepper

  • 4-5 tsp sugar

  • Rice to serve

First, cut your long beans into reasonable lengths, take a sturdy cup or bowl, and mash your beans until they split open. This is an essential step since they tend to be a little tough and bitter. By opening up your beans, you allow the dressing to get soaked up inside of them. Next, mince your garlic cloves and serrano pepper, chop your basil leaves, and slice your tomatoes. Add all of these ingredients to a bowl with your long beans, squeeze the juice of 3 limes over them, and pour in your fish sauce, salt, pepper, and sugar. Combine thoroughly and serve next to rice if preferred!

Next up, we have a quick and delicious Vietnamese Fish Soup.

Vietnamese Fish Soup Ingredients

  • 2-3 shallots

  • 1 Thai chili

  • ⅓ cup cilantro

  • 1 tomato

  • ½ cup pineapple

  • 1 lb salmon (or your choice of fish)

  • 6-7 cups water

  • 2 tablespoons chicken seasoning

  • 1 tsp fish sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • ½ tablespoon sugar

First, chop your shallots in a small bowl, add your Thai chili in, mash it all together thoroughly, and set aside. Chop your cilantro, slice your tomato and pineapple into thick slices, and set those aside as well. Next, cook your slices of salmon in boiling water for 4 minutes. Add everything you have set aside (shallots, chili, cilantro, tomato, and pineapple) to the water, saving some cilantro to top your soup with. Then, also add the chicken seasoning, fish sauce, salt, pepper, and sugar. Top with your remaining cilantro and enjoy!

Our next recipe is somewhat of a well-known dish: Chicken fried rice! I don’t know about you, but I could eat this stuff all day, every day.

Chicken Fried Rice Ingredients

All ingredient measurements are up to you!

  • Garlic

  • Green onion

  • Chinese sausage

  • Peas

  • Eggs (previously whisked together in a bowl)

  • Day-old white rice

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Soy Sauce

  • Butter

  • Parsley to top

  • Oil (olive or vegetable)

While making this classic Asian dish, remember that you can add as much of each ingredient as you feel necessary. First, mince your garlic, chop your green onion, and slice your Chinese sausage. You could also use any other meat instead (except for hot dog meat, according to @newt120...That would be nasty!) Next, throw your day-old rice in a pan with some oil and cook until it gets “warm and sticky.” Take it out and set it to the side for now. Then, saute your peas and minced garlic in that same pan, season with a little salt and pepper, add in your meat, and throw the rice back in. Drizzle some soy sauce in and stir thoroughly until it reaches a “nice mahogany” color. Slide all of these combined ingredients to one side of the pan and add your previously whisked eggs to the other side of the pan. Let the eggs cook a little bit on the side, then combine with the other ingredients. Throw in a chunk of butter and your green onion, mix until the butter is melted, top with parsley, and there you have it! A classic chicken fried rice dish.

To finish off our Asian TikTok recipes, we have a couple more traditional meals by user @chefchrischo. First up, is a noodle dish called Jjajangmyeon.

Jjajangmyeon Ingredients

  • Splash of oil (olive or vegetable)

  • 1 tablespoon chopped scallions

  • 200 grams pork

  • 120 grams diced white onion

  • 120 grams zucchini

  • 120 grams cabbage

  • Choonjan (black bean paste)

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • 4 tablespoons water (for Potato Starch Slurry)

  • 2 tablespoons potato starch (for Potato Starch Slurry)

  • 250 grams of noodles (generally labeled in store for udon and jajangmyeon - 우동 짜장면 or jungwhamyeon - 중화면)

Begin by placing a splash of oil into a pan along with your scallions and pork on medium-high heat. After the pork is cooked, remove it all and leave the pork fat behind in the pan. Add your onion, zucchini, and cabbage to the pan and “let it sweat” while cooking with the fat. Then, add your pork back in with the vegetables along with your Choonjan, sugar, and 2 cups of water. As you turn the heat down to simmer, add in your soy sauce. In a separate cup, combine 4 tablespoons of water and 2 tablespoons of potato starch to create a potato starch slurry. Mix this in with your simmering pan of ingredients to thicken it up. Finally, boil your noodles for 5-7 minutes and combine it all.

Last, but certainly not least, is @chefchrischo’s Soondubu dish (which is a yummy seafood soup).

Soondubu Ingredients

  • ½ tablespoon minced garlic

  • 1 tablespoon chopped scallions (have some extra on hand to top)

  • 4 tablespoons diced white onion

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

  • 1 tablespoon pepper powder

  • ½ tablespoon pepper flakes

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

  • Pinch of black pepper

  • Anchovy broth (however much you feel necessary)

  • Salt to taste

  • Squid (however much you feel necessary)

  • Shrimp (however much you feel necessary)

  • 4-5 baby clams

  • 1 tablespoon clam juice

  • Mushrooms (however much you feel necessary)

  • 200 grams tofu

  • 1 egg

Start by adding your garlic, scallions, onions, and vegetable oil to a pot on the stove. Let it all “sweat” under low-medium heat. Then, add your pepper powder, pepper flakes, soy sauce, black pepper, and mix. Next, pour in the anchovy stalk, bring it to a boil, and salt it to taste. Add in your squid, shrimp, clams, clam juice, mushrooms, 2 more tablespoons of onions, and tofu. Make sure while adding your tofu, you gently break it up into large chunks. Finish it off by cracking an egg on top and let it all cook together.
