Ranked! Online Concerts

By Rachael Lovette

In an alternate universe, I would be counting down the days until K-pop superstars like BTS, MONSTA X, and Stray Kids undoubtedly kicked off the North American leg of their 2021 world tours. The reality is it’s been almost a year since the world stopped. The absence of live concerts has impacted fans and artists worldwide, but we’ve all found our own ways to cope.

K-Pop artists have taken to platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and V Live to connect with their fans on a more personal level, but they didn’t stop there. On any given day, over the last six months, K-Pop fans could find their favorites hosting a live online concert, participating in a virtual music festival with other artists, or making FaceTime calls with fans.

Between staying up late to waking up at 3:00 am, I have witnessed some amazing (and not so amazing) pay-per-view live online concerts. Here they are ranked - from best to worst.

FIRST PLACE: BTS Map of the Soul ON:E

The two-day concert event was originally planned to be held both in-person and online, but due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, it was only held online. It was everything fans could expect from a BTS concert, including powerful dance breaks, solo performances, theatrics, and beautiful stages.

Some of my favorite performances include:

SECOND PLACE: Stray Kids Unlock: Go Live in Life

Date: November 22, 2020

Platform: V Live

Details: After an insanely busy year, Stray Kids delivered an unforgettable online concert for their fans. Stray Kids could hardly contain their excitement for the big day; the excitement became contagious with their multiple V Lives and social media posts leading up to the concert and Chang Bin’s tweets minutes before the concert started. With a setlist to die for, gorgeous VCR’s, and a surprise group V Live (followed by a scheduled V Live with fans by leader Chan), Stray Kids kept STAY well-fed for nearly six hours!

Some of my favorite performances include:

THIRD PLACE: Monsta X Live From Seoul with Luv

After being postponed due to Shownu’s health, Monsta X blessed Monbebe with a delightful mix of powerful performances, touching VCRs, and charming stage presences. Not to mention that heartwarming live chat among the members with fans to share updates on how they are doing, what they are feeling, and what Monbebe can look forward to in the near future.

Date: August 9, 2020

Platform: LIVE X LIVE

Some of my favorite performances include:

Under normal circumstances, Beyond Live - Baekhyun: Light would have taken place in front of thousands of screaming fans in a sold-out stadium. However, the show’s fully virtual nature did nothing to dim the brilliance of this nearly two-hour experience. In an illuminating display of his talents as a vocalist and performer, Baekhyun showcased his versatility to embody a range of concepts and genres, his duality to go from cheeky goofball to charming flirt, and his ability to mesmerize and enthrall viewers.

Platform: V Live

While there are currently no performance videos on YouTube to share, my favorite performances included the songs “Youth,” “Addicted,” and “Growl.”

Also how CUTE is this send-off video?

BTS Bang Bang Con: The Live

Each year BTS celebrates the lead-up to their debut date, June 12th, by teasing ARMY with various new songs, videos, and content, culminating in a concert. This year marked seven years since BTS’s debut and while they couldn’t meet ARMY in person, they still put on one heck of a show. With new performances and a delightful trip down memory lane, Bang Bang Con The Live felt like an intimate hangout with friends.

Golden Child Ontact Concert - NOW

Golden Child Ontact Concert - NOW set out to complete the story Golden Child started with their first concert ‘Future and Past’ held in January 2020, and it was a complete success. From perfect vocals and dancing to beautiful stages and fun surprises (including the announcement of their fourth mini-album), Golden Child effortlessly captured the hearts of Goldenness.

Here's a quick compilation of some of my favorite performances:

LAST: ATEEZ 2nd Anniversary Concert: Port of Call

ATEEZ shed their rookie title and greeted their fans, ATINY, with a plethora of stages and moments for all to reminisce on how far they had come. However, the transitions between songs, costumes, and hairstyles were a mere handful of seconds instead of the typical 3-5 minute intermission, making it obvious that most of the concert, if not all, was pre-recorded.
