Different Types of Homemade Hair Masks

With society still amidst a pandemic, many people have been refraining from going to salons or spas either due to personal/health preferences or due to state or county closures. Also, many are working remotely and looking for methods of providing store-quality self-care from the comfort of home. Here are a variety of easy at-home hair mask recipes. Each recipe has common household ingredients that provide several benefits to your hair and scalp.


Hair mask for those with thicker hair

  • ½ of an avocado

  • 1 banana

  • 2 tablespoon of olive oil

  1. Put avocado and banana into a bowl to mash together.

  2. After both are mashed together, apply the olive oil and mix.

  3. Once mixed, apply to hair starting from the ends to the scalp.

  4. Leave in for 30 minutes then wash out with shampoo and conditioner


Hair mask for those with dandruff or oily scalps

  • ½ of a lemon

  • 2 tablespoons of honey

  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

  1. Cut half of the lemon and squeeze into a bowl. Remove the seeds.

  2. Crack the egg into a different bowl and separate the yolk.

  3. Apply the egg whites with the olive oil and mix.

  4. Once mixed, add in the honey, then the brown sugar. Mix everything.

  5. After mixing, apply to the scalp while in shower.

  6. Scrub for 5 minutes and then wash with shampoo and conditioner.


Hair mask for hair growth

  • 1 tablespoon of coconut oil

  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon

  • 2 tablespoons of yogurt

  • ½ of a banana

  1. Add all the ingredients to a bowl and mix thoroughly.

  2. Once mixed apply to hair starting from ends to your scalp.

  3. Leave in for 30 minutes and then wash hair with shampoo and conditioner.


Hair mask for curly hair

  • 1 egg

  • ½ of an avocado

  • 2 tablespoons of honey

  • 2 tablespoons of Coconut oil

  1. Crack the egg into a bowl and separate the yolk.

  2. Add the egg whites with the avocado and mix till thoroughly combined.

  3. Once mixed, add in the honey and the coconut oil and mix again.

  4. After mixing, apply to the scalp and hair starting at the roots.

  5. Wrap head in a cap or a t-shirt then leave in for 20 minutes

  6. Lastly, wash with shampoo and conditioner.



Some of the ingredients and their benefits:

Avocado - contains vitamins C and E. Also contains folate which helps repair damaged hair.

Banana - contains natural oils, potassium, carbohydrates which help prevent frizz and moisturize.

Lemon - high in Vitamin C, absorbs oils and contains anti-fungal properties.

Cinnamon- improves blood circulation to scalp hair follicles and contains antimicrobial properties.

Yogurt - contains lactic acids that help treat damaged hair.

Eggs - Contains vitamins A, D, and E, proteins, and fatty acids which help heal and condition hair.
